What I’m Reading This Fall

If you ask me, every season is the season for reading, but Fall has something a little extra. You can read outside with a blanket and a hot cup of something. You can cozy up inside in the evening next to the glow of a lamp. It’s the season of thrillers and cozy mysteries and breezy romances. It’s the season when football plays all day and you can happily read while your husband happily watches.

I was home all summer with my three boys so very pregnant and was pretty off and on with reading. And then Maddie entered the scene, and my reading has fallen by the wayside even more. Such is motherhood! BUT I’m starting to feel like I’m getting back in the groove of reading. I’m getting in a couple chapters every night and throughout the day when I can snatch a few minutes. My season of reading is now!

A few weeks ago, I asked for suggestions for great books lately. Something that I like to do every now and then when I feel like I’ve gotten out of the habit of keeping up with current publishing. I always hear about books that I know I’ll love and I immediately went through the list and placed a bunch of library holds. Picked up a huge stack the other day, and wanted to share my list just in case you’re on the lookout for some new reads that other people have enjoyed.

The list:

1// Sandwich, by Catherine Newman – this is absolutely a summer book, but I’m calling it my end of summer book. I’m currently reading it and it’s giving me all the feels about motherhood and time and how quickly it all goes. *sobs softly*

2// Enchanted To Meet You, by Meg Cabot – The only book I picked up on a whim. I was obsessed with Meg Cabot books for all of my teen years. Who doesn’t love a throwback? I haven’t read one of her books in years and haven’t even read the inside, but I believe that it’s about witches. Very Fallish.

3// Same As It Ever Was, by Claire Lombardo – Her last book (the Most Fun We Ever Had) got so much hype and I missed it! Couldn’t let this one go by when I saw it suggested!

4// She’s Not Sorry, by Mary Kubica – Needed a good thriller on the list. I read Local Woman Missing by her a few years ago and I’ll never forget it. It was a good one. Hoping this one won’t disappoint!

5// The Frozen River, by Ariel Lawhon – This one comes highly highly recommended. Everyone who has read it has raved. Several people said that it was their favorite book of the year so far. And how perfect to get our moods ready for some cooler weather?

6// Nettle & Bone, by T. Kingfisher – This one came out in 2022 and I missed it then but heard good things. It’s a fantasy book and I love a fantasy in the fall.

7// We All Want Impossible Things, by Catherine Newman – I didn’t make the connection that this is the same author as Sandwich until I picked it up, so I must be missing something by not reading these yet! I also have been told that this book will make you weep.

8// All the Colors of the Dark, by Chris Whitaker – Alright, so I actually started reading it, and had to put it down. It’s quite long, and my brain is not at 100% as the mother of a newborn and 3 small boys.

And just a few more on my list that haven’t come in yet.

The God of the Woods, by Liz Moore

Slow Dance, by Rainbow Rowell

The Cliffs, by J. Courtney Sullivan

What’s on your list to read this season? And what else have you read lately that I need to put on my list? I’d love to hear!

Pumpkin Yeast Rolls.

Well, I’ve posted about these over on Instagram nearly every day since I’ve made them. I wanted to put the recipe here for those of you (show of hands, mine included) who prefer to see a recipe on a website, rather than a tiny instagram screen. Is this waxing on about how everyone needs them a sign of obsession? I think it might be, and I think it’s also a sign that I need to make them again this weekend. Maybe…if our new fridge arrives on Saturday like it’s supposed to. Our died a tragic death this week, and we’re currently living on peanut butter sandwiches, bananas and ramen.

A little disclaimer – the pumpkin shape is very, I repeat, very cute. BUT you don’t actually need to spend the extra time to make them into the pumpkins. This recipe is delicious even in the shape of regular rolls. Especially if you slather them in butter and dip them in cinnamon sugar. I keep pitching them as a Thanksgiving centerpiece, but I think I might enjoy them even more on the breakfast table with a pile of fruit and a few slices of bacon. So good.

Pumpkin Yeast Rolls

You’ll need:
1/4 cup warm water
2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
1/4 cup white sugar (1 tablespoon for yeast mixture, 3 tablespoons in the rest of the dough)
3/4 cup pumpkin puree
1/4 cup butter
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 egg
3 1/4 cups all-purpose flour (don’t add this all at once. depending on your pumpkin puree thickness, and baking conditions, you may not need it all!)
Cinnamon sugar & melted butter (optional)
Cinnamon sticks for stems!

To make:

  1. In a small bowl, add water, a tablespoon of white sugar, and yeast. Stir together and set aside to rise.
  2. In a small saucepan, stir together pumpkin puree and butter on a medium heat, stirring constantly. Allow to cool slightly.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, add 2 1/4 cups of flour, remaining 3 tablespoons of white sugar, and salt. Stir in yeast and egg, and mix well. Add in pumpkin and butter mixture. Add in remaining cup of flour, 1/2 cup at a time (*note: you may not need all of the flour depending on the consistency of your pumpkin puree – you want your dough to pull away from the bowl, but not to get too dry. A little stickiness is good as long as you can still work with it!) Stir well until dough comes away from the sides of the bowl.
  4. Turn dough onto a lightly floured surface, and knead for 5 minutes until smooth (again….it’s better if your dough’s a little sticky here, rather than adding too much flour). You can use your dough hook instead if you have a mixer!
  5. Cover with a clean, damp cloth, and let rest for 10 minutes.
  6. Divide the dough into 9-12 equal pieces, and roll into round balls. Cut a piece of string long enough that it can wrap around the dough ball four times. You’ll need a piece for each roll.
  7. Carefully place the center of the string over the first dough ball, flip over, cross the string over itself so it creates tension, flip the dough over again, and repeat. The goal is to create four equal cross sections of the ball. I shared a reel for how to do this! The string should be snug enough to stay in place, but no tighter than that, as it will tighten as the dough continues to rise. Tie a double knot at the end, and trim the ends of the string so they aren’t too long. Place onto a baking sheet, and repeat for all remaining dough balls.
  8. Cover dough balls with a towel, and let rise for about 30 minutes, or until you can press a finger into the dough and it leaves an indent (if it bounces back quickly, it needs more rise time).
  9. Bake the dough for 15-17 minutes, or until golden. Remove and allow to cool slightly before cutting strings and gently removing. Serve warm.

*if covering in cinnamon sugar – melt some butter and brush on the rolls while still warm. Roll around in cinnamon sugar. Add little cinnamon stems on top for cute factor!

Dreaming about…a Picnic Date.

I know that it’s still snowing where some of you are and I think that’s just the pits. But where we live in Florida, it has been all blue skies and lovely breezes and windows thrown open, and all I can romanticize about right now is a picnic in a big green field with butterflies flitting by, a husband by my side, cold grapes, a bottle of crisp white and fresh cheese on a cracker to go along. Play along with me as I daydream about a picnic date.

The sweetest little sundress to lounge in,

a French market bag to tuck a baguette and all the fixings into,

a straw hat because a sunburn isn’t at all romantic,

buffalo check napkins to use all through spring and summer,

enamel tumblers in *tarragon* for sipping,

the cheeseboard of my dreams,

a recipe book for menu inspiration galore,

a pretty berry basket for fruit,

the only blanket you could possibly take on a picnic this romantic,

and this cute mini cooler to keep it all icy.

Meal Plan This Week.

Well, it’s starting to seem like I don’t put anything but meal plans on here! But oh well, here it is! The week ahead. May it go smoothly for us all!!

Sunday – Chili. My husband makes a very classic version, and it’s so good. We pile on corn chips, cheese and onion. I’ll get him to type up his recipe someday.

Monday – Grilled Chicken, Cheesy Butternut Squash Casserole, & Kale Salad. The butternut squash recipe is from Feeding a Family by Sarah Waldman.

Tuesday – Burrito Casserole. Bit of a casserole theme going, huh? I saw a recipe on Diane Morrisey’s Instagram account that gave me an idea so I’m running with it! Will share the recipe if it’s any good.

Wednesday – Homemade Chicken Strips with Za’atar Ranch, and Mac & Cheese. One for the kids! The chicken strips and ranch recipe is from The Modern Proper cookbook which I highly recommend. If I have time, I’ll make the Mac and Cheese, but I have a box on hand just in case.

Thursday – Leftovers always!

Friday – Pizza night!

Saturday – Dinner in a Pumpkin. For Charlie’s birthday! Last year I made Ballerina Farm’s recipe, and this year I might switch it up a bit. You can really make any soup, and just transfer it to a pumpkin.

Bake – Charlie’s Birthday Cake. He’s gone from bat to witch to dinosaur, but the last week or two he’s seemed pretty set on dinosaur. I’ll probably make a layer cake. My favorite white cake recipe comes from Simple Cake by Odette Williams. Look for the Very Vanilla Cake.

Treat – Halloween Sugar Cookies. So excited for these.

Cocktail – Shrunken Apple Punch. We made this last year, and the apple carving was so fun.

That’s it! Can you believe we’re over halfway through October? I could cry!

Meal Plan This Week.

Monday – Crockpot Carnitas Rice Bowls. We’ve gotten a carnitas roast from Aldi a few times before and it is SO good and so easy. You just toss it all in the crockpot and cook like a normal roast. I’ll make rice and a side of black beans when I get home from school and we’ll top with fresh salsa, guacamole, cilantro, drizzle sour cream thinned with lime, and a few dashes of sriracha and a dash of tajin on top if we’re feeling snazzy.

Tuesday – Carnitas Tacos. Kind of like yesterday, but on soft tacos that have been warmed in the oven and with pickled onions and a heap of taco slaw on top. Oof, yum.

Wednesday Creamy Chicken Ramen Soup. Like a hug in a bowl.

Thursday – Leftovers always!

Friday – Pizza night! Plus family movie after, obviously

Saturday – Charcuterie Board. My favorite kind of dinner. I’ll pick up whatever looks good, but I do have a pinterest board for inspiration! It only has six pins, so I really need to go add some more. I think I’d like to master the fine art of charcuterie board building.

Sunday – Grilled Cheese & Tomato Soup. Grilled Cheese on my sourdough, tomato soup from a can because call me crazy – that’s my favorite tomato soup. I think it just takes me back to my childhood! I’d be happy to hear suggestions for your favorite tomato soup – but don’t be offended if I don’t try it.

Bake –Apple Crisp with homemade vanilla ice cream. Nothing says mid-september best.

Treat – Molasses Cookies. I think I’ve put this on a couple past plans and haven’t gotten to them. I’m committed to them this time!

Cocktail – September Heatwave. I also had this on last week’s, but we switched to our pumpkin beer date night instead. Having this alongside a big fall puzzle on the coffee table for our weekend date & cocktail pairing.

Make anything good lately? Please share, so I can drool!
