Our Home in Lights.

If you’ve been following along on Instagram with our home renovations – you know that the ceilings have been a top priority. And ok yes, also the fireplace and taking down the wallpaper and, and and. But mostly the ceilings. We lived for years with our popcorn ceilings and lights that I hated in our previous home. When we finally got up the motivation to have the work done, I realized that they should have been our top priority to begin with. The ceilings you live with make such a gigantic difference in the feel of your home. So in our new home, they’ve been the first thing on the list. We removed popcorn ceilings before we even moved in (the dust it creates is – phew!!), the ceiling fans came next, and finally we decided we should just go for it and replaced the rest of the lights while we had someone coming to work on the house anyway. And let me tell you – I am so happy we did it. Our ceilings make me so happy now! So if you too are on the hunt for some new lights for your home – I’m here to share our picks. Maybe you’re ready to replace those boob lights that have been haunting your dreams?? I don’t know about you, but once I knew their nickname, I couldn’t bring myself to look at them for another moment.

  1. My favorite affordable Schoolhouse Light. We installed these in our old kitchen and entry and I’m just gonna say that you can’t go wrong with this classic. We installed them in the entry in this house and I love them so much. I also really love this one if you had a small hallway that you’re looking for. If you’re on the hunt for hallways – we installed these small ($10!!) acorn lights in our last house and I loved them too.
  2. Our beloved ceiling fans. The only fan I would put on a ceiling. We live in south Florida and neeeeeeeeed fans in our house. These blend into the ceiling and aren’t at all an eye sore. They pack a powerful breeze too!
  3. A ruffled pendant for over the sink. Just vintage style and cute.
  4. Flush Mount lights for over the island. These are right next to our rather eye catching table fixture. I wanted something to tie in with the pendant and the dining table light. I felt like these worked without being distracting. I didn’t want too many things hanging down from the cetiling and having flush mount lights over the island really opens up the space.
  5. A double light sconce for over our dresser. The only light that I really splurged on. I wanted something special for this little nook in between our bathroom and closet. This one is perrrrrfect. I thought that three lights would feel too much like a bathroom, and one light sconce wouldn’t fill the space right. I’m glad that I spent a little extra on something I felt was really perfect.
  6. Finally – our dining table light. I saw this on display at Home Depot and I was immediately like “YES” that’s the one. And then I chose the other kitchen lights to tie in with this one because I love it so much. It just fits the style of our new home, and I think it looks so pretty without being too MUCH for our open floor plan. I love the classic black chandelier that we put into our old house, but I just think this one goes a little better in this home.

There you have it! Our home in lights!

On Mundane, Practical Resolutions and Making Them Happen.

Every new year I sit down and write a lengthy list of goals. Last year I did it stream of consciousness style on a Google doc. Most years past I’ve used a notebook to jot things down. Neither are a bad way to do it, and it’s always nice to read back through to see what I was working on last year.

But Iโ€™ve become a bit more methodical (in my old age) and typed up a big numbered list on google docs this year. 32 things! Eek! But I have to tell Theyโ€™re not all hard. You might even look at it as part to do list, part list of goals. For example, one is โ€œclean out my closetโ€, another is โ€œrepaint the back porch floorโ€, and “teach Charlie to ride a bike”. These are just (kind of mundane) tasks that really do need to be done and I can cross them off and not think about them again for a good long while. But others need a bit more doing. Things such as “run 6 miles without rest” and “read 80 books” and “find inspiration, but stop mindless scrolling”. This is all fine and good to say those things, but how do you get there?

So this year, I took my list, and under each item I added “HOW?” And then I jotted down some notes for each.

How am I going to make sure that I make it to a yoga class each week? I need to communicate with my husband to see what night works with his schedule. I sent him a text to see for this week and went ahead and signed up for the class this week. Done

How am I going to make sure that we potty train Luke? Well I know that this summer would be ideal. If we do it in June then we’ll have a nice long chunk of time that we’re off school and we can just be home and near the potty. I wrote it in all caps in my planner.

How am I going to make sure not to buy any clothes new for me or the boys this year? I’m going to pick a day to thrift each week after school.

If it helps you to see exactly what it looks like in my document, here are a couple:

  1. Do Duolingo every day.
    1. How?
      1. Pick a specific time and stay consistent.
      2. Set a reminder on my phone.
  2. Read 80 books.
    1. How?
      1. Aim for 2 books a week.
      2. Have books on hand at all times to read. Utilize audiobooks and e-books when needed. I should be able to read 2 books every week. This would be 104 books. This is something I do most weeks. Read before bed, audiobooks at school during shelving and on runs.
      3. Post monthly reading posts on emetamily.com to summarize and help keep track.
      4. Continue posting weekly reviews on instagram on Mondays to stay motivated.
      5. Continue placing holds and making weekly library stops.

And how to make sure I keep up with it all for the year? Well, I took a look at all of my goals and then I wrote a separate little list at the bottom of my document:

– Things to fit into every day: Workouts, Cooking, Meditate, Reading, Duolingo, Playing with the boys, etc.
– Things to fit into the week: Yoga, Library visit, Baking, Weekly Dates, etc.
– Things to fit into the month: Friend Dinners, cocktails with my sister, etc.
– Things to fit into my year: Knit a sweater, have our ceilings redone, sign the boys up for sports, power wash the house, etc.

This really helps me visualize when/how I’m going to get these things done. Is it reasonable? I already know it is because I’ve taken a look at my schedule and scheduled things in. Every day I’m going to do five minutes of Duolingo right when I wake up. I’m going to meditate for ten minutes right before I get in the shower every night. I’m going to a yoga session at 7:30pm tomorrow night. I read 70 books this year at a pretty leisurely pace, so I should be able to read 80 this year. We had a guy come yesterday to give us a quote for our ceilings and he’s going to begin work in the middle of the month. I’m going to ask my dad to paint the porch floor when they visit for the month of February. Boom. I’ve already made progress.

Really the only thing to do next is to form the habits. Dig in and stick to them. Stop being lazy, and really get nitty gritty with the details. Set an alarm on your phone every month “monthly check in!!” to hold yourself accountable. That’s the way to make sure you get stuff done. Just hold yourself to it. Don’t rely on someone to nag you. Make it your goal to keep your promises to yourself and just make it happen.

I remember when I started trying to figure out how to work, and be a mom, and still do things for myself. I was feeling very overwhelmed, so I wrote up a little schedule “An Ideal Week”. I wrote down all the half hours in the day and days of the week, and I filled in what I would ideally be doing each day at that time for an entire week. From 5:30-7pm I wanted to put my phone away and have family dinner and play with my kids. At 5am I wanted to be up and wanted to eat my breakfast, drink my coffee and be alone before I had to start getting ready for the day. On Sunday nights I wanted to have a check in with my husband on what his week is going to look like. And those are the things that to this day I do! That’s something you might try if you’re struggling with figuring out how to have time to do more for yourself and for your family. We all have the same amount of time in the day. We just all use it in different ways.

I also do think that my Making Every Day Special document that I made a few years ago might be helpful if you’re struggling to form home habits (like doing laundry every day, or celebrating minor and major holidays).

Meal Plan This Week.

Something about the school year starting just turns me into this kitchen monster. Itโ€™s like I have to spend time in the kitchen. I think itโ€™s being out of the house all day, and the fact that our kitchen is one of my favorite places on earth and cooking and baking is one way that I say โ€œI love youโ€ to my family. Anyway, lots of good things happening in the kitchen. Hereโ€™s this weekโ€™s meal plan just in case it might inspire your meals this week!

MondayCrock Pot Gyros – crock pot Mondays are truly a gift during the school week. I come home to dinner being pretty much made. Iโ€™ll buy tzatziki from the store to make it easy, and if Iโ€™m especially productive, Iโ€™ll chop up the veggies on Sunday night.

Tuesday – Taco Salad (I donโ€™t really use a recipe for this – just crushed Doritos, taco meat, lettuce, and a whole bunch of toppings) – served with an ice cold margarita with salt on the rim for me, and no salt for my husband. Iโ€™ll have the boys cut up the iceberg lettuce for our after school transition activity while I brown the meat and Lukey terrorizes us all.

Wednesday – Grilled Chicken with Tomato Tart or possibly this tomato tart recipe that I also bookmarked!

Thursday – Leftovers

FridayPizza! (Of course)

SaturdayChurrasco Skirt Steak with Chimichurri Sauce – served with roasted fingerling potatoes, a big green salad and that rosรฉ punch you see below. Throw in a board game after the boys go to bed and itโ€™s basically a date night at home.

SundayStreet Corn Chowder – served with crusty sourdough and all the mix-ins. Do not skip the cream sauce in the recipe. Amazing.

BakePeach Pound Cake – I think that Iโ€™ll make this in a Bundt pan with a glaze on top. Yum.

CocktailRosรฉ Punch

TreatFluffernutter Cookies – we usually make a treat on Thursdays as itโ€™s leftovers night, so the time spent in the kitchen for dinner is low. This recipe will be a great one for the boys. I have a bag full of stale marshmallows and I think Iโ€™ll put them in charge of wrapping the marshmallow up with the dough.

Bon appetit, friends!

What are you making this week? Anything I need to know about? You know Iโ€™m already thinking about my next meal plan!

The Friday Post. [vol. 5]

Well, I’ve only been marginally successful at my goal of daily blogging during the school year so far. I’ve been re-reading 168 Hours: You Have More Time Than You Think, by Laura Vanderkam, a fascinating book on how to make the most of your time by spending it on things that matter to you. I’ve determined that I absolutely have enough time to blog, care for my three kids, cook dinner every night, work full time, train for a marathon, meditate, learn spanish, bake on weekends and read at least one book for pleasure a week. haha. I know. That sounds ridiculous when you type it all out, doesn’t it? But people do it! It can be done! I’m going to do it, you guys. And then I’m going to share all of my secrets with you. This space though is one of those things that I know I can do with a little time.

Anyway – how was your week? The boys were at school all week, and I just went back yesterday, so it felt like a very fast week. We’ve been working out a few kinks (mainly in tender-hearted morning emotions), but overall it’s been good! The only thing dragging me down is that moment when my alarm goes off at 5am. I much prefer the yells of my children as an alarm clock.

Are you up to anything this weekend? I need to sit down with my husband tonight and discuss weekend plans over pizza and peach bourbon lemonades because as of yet, we’ve got nothing. A trip to the beach? A wander through the art museum? A kite flying expedition? A laze in the pool in our backyard? I don’t know, it’s going to be hard to choose between all those. We DO however, need to plant our pumpkin seeds because I’m hoping to have some homegrown Halloween pumpkins around here! Now, how about some fun links from around the web?

I’ve been looking forward to the newest episode of this show all week! Call me crazy, but I enjoy the old school excitement that comes from waiting for a new episode every week.

My friend just sent this video and I can’t stop giggling.

Such a pretty dress.

Books to read in August.

This dreamy house. Do you follow her on Instagram?

Tell me Iโ€™m not the only one planning for Fall.

Iโ€™ve been browsing store window displays on pinterest for ideas for my library and now that Iโ€™ve started, I canโ€™t stop.

Whatever you do this weekend, I hope you enjoy it, friends!

An August To Do List.

You guys, I was looking through my blog this morning as my first *School Year Is Starting, But I’m Not Working Yet* order of business, and I really thought I had more on here than I do. Ha! It’s a bit bare bones isn’t it? I have pages and pages full of post ideas. One of my goals for the school year is to get this little spot up and running with regular posts each week. I do still love Instagram, but I know there are mixed feelings on it. This could be a really cool spot with a little more time dedicated to it, couldn’t it? On to this August to do list though!

If you’ve been following me for a while, then you know that every month, I make a list of things to do in certain (favorite! fun! exciting! whimsical!) categories (Bake, Treats, Cocktails, Meals, and Home). Typically, I do four things under each category and then I pick one from each category every week. So every week I’m crossing something off from each little list. I find that if I list everything out like this at the beginning of the month, I automatically eliminate the need to make any crippling decisions during the month. I do it all at once, and then I’m just left with time to actually do those things on my list! It works, trust me. I’m much more productive since I’ve starting planning my months out like this. You could obviously make the categories anything you’re into. And maybe you could just do a couple under each category if you think it’s unlikely that you’ll do something every single week. This is just what works for me. Make it your own!

So (drumroll please) the August LIST! Just click on the text for a link to the recipes!
